Cathedral of Santa Catalina de Alejandría

Dedicated to a little known area Saint, Santa Catalina de Alejandría, the Cartagena Cathedral sprung, as in other New Granada Cities, under a primitive version almost simultaneously with the first city settlements.  The first Cathedral was modest wooden chapel burnt down in 1552.

The current structure was built in 1575.  It has had an uneven existence, bombarded during the city's many sieges and collapsing on and off from faulty construction.  The current tower and facade were rebuilt at the beginning of this century, holding no likeness to its original style.
