Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Snowy Mountain Range of Saint Martha) is an isolated mountain range apart from the Andes chain that runs through Colombia. Reaching an altitude of 5,700 metres above sea level just 42 km from the Caribbean coast, the Sierra Nevada is the world's highest coastal range. The Sierra Nevada encompasses about 17,000 km² and serves as the source of 36 rivers. Its range covers the Magdalena Department, Cesar Department and La Guajira Department.
The highest point of the Sierra Nevada group (and Colombia in general) may be either Pico Cristóbal Colón or Pico Simón Bolívar; it has yet to be determined which is higher. SRTM data and local topographic maps show that their true elevations are approximately 5,700 metres, lower than the 5,775 metre elevation that is often quoted.
The Sierra Nevada is a compact group, relatively small in area, and completely surrounded by lands with elevations below 200 metres. The main backbone of the Andes cannot be reached from the Sierra Nevada without dropping below this level. This makes its highest point the world's fifth most prominent summit.


La Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, es una montaña separada de la cadena de los Andes que entra a Colombia. Alcanzando una altitud de 5,700 mtrs. sobre el nivel del mar, a sólo 42Km.de la costa Caribe, la Sierra Nevada es la más alta montaña costera. La Sierra Nevada se extiende sobre 17.000 Km cuadrados y sirve como fuente de 36 ríos. Se extiende sobre el Departamento del Magdalena, Departamento del cesar y Departamento de la Guajira.
El punto más elevado de la Sierra Nevada (y de colombia en general) puede ser entre Pico Cristóbal Colón ó Pico Simón Bolívar; hay que determinarse cual es el más alto. SRTM data and locales mapas topográficos, muestran que la verdadera elevación esta aproximadamente en 5,700 mtrs., abajo de los 5.775 mtrs. regularmente señalados.
La Sierra Nevada es un grupo compacto, relativamente pequeño en área y completamente rodeada por tierra con elevaciones inferiores a los 200 mtrs. El sistema Andino es totalmente separado y no puede ser alcanzado sin descender abajo de este nivel. Esto hace que sea el más alto punto de la tierra, más cercano al mar.

Cocuy National Natural Park

The Cocuy National Natural Park is located in the central-eastern section of the eastern Andes mountain range, under the jurisdiction of the departments of Boyacá, Arauca, and Casanare. The Sierra is a chain of over 25 snow peaks along an extension of just 30 kilometers. Most of this beautiful, majestic range - the greatest mass of ice in Colombia - may be explored on foot.

For many, many years the Sierra, also known as Güican and Chita, has been a favorite destination of international and Colombian mountaineers and climbers, a fact which has made it possible to spread the message of this natural and protected area. The Sierra is the ideal place for lovers of rock, ice, and snow, and fans of hiking and camping. It is possible to admire mountains and páramos, and the forests that cover the valleys nestled among the snow peaks. For all of the above, El Cocuy is sure to delight the most daring adventurers.
